Where Do University of West Attica Students Live? Areas & Housing

Where Do University of West Attica Students Live?

The University of West Attica (UniWA) is one of the universities in Athens that has a strong influence on the housing market in the western suburbs of the city. The reason is quite straightforward: a large part of the university’s academic activity is concentrated around Aigaleo, with the Aigaleo Park Campus and the Ancient Olive Grove Campus, while there is also the Athens Campus on Alexandras Avenue.

For a student arriving in Athens for the first time, choosing where to live is therefore not only about finding the cheapest possible rent. It is also about how easily they can get to university every day, how much time they will spend commuting and whether the area offers the kind of everyday life they actually want.

Where Are the University of West Attica Campuses?

A large concentration of departments is located in Aigaleo.

The Aigaleo Park Campus is located on Agiou Spyridonos Street and hosts a number of departments, including departments related to Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Computer and Informatics Engineering, Surveying and Geoinformatics, Interior Architecture and others.

The Ancient Olive Grove Campus is located around Petrou Ralli and Thivon Avenue. Several departments are based there, including Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Industrial Design and Production Engineering.

There is also the Athens Campus on Alexandras Avenue, which hosts specific departments and university activities.

This means that before looking for a home, it is worth checking which campus your particular department is located at. Not every University of West Attica student attends classes in the same place.

Aigaleo: One of the Most Practical Choices for Many Students

If your main priority is being close to university, Aigaleo is one of the first areas worth considering.

The two major UniWA campuses are located in the same wider area, making Aigaleo particularly convenient for students who want to keep their daily commute as short as possible.

The Ancient Olive Grove Campus is also accessible through Line 3 of the Athens Metro, via Aigaleo station, as well as through several bus and trolley routes.

This makes Aigaleo interesting not only for students who want to live close to their university, but also for those who want a relatively easy connection to other parts of Athens.

For a first-year student who does not yet know the city, this can make everyday life considerably easier.

Agia Marina and the Surrounding Area

The wider area around Agia Marina is another option worth considering.

The main advantage is transportation. The area is served by Metro Line 3, making it possible to live relatively close to the university while maintaining a convenient connection towards central Athens.

For students attending the Aigaleo Park Campus in particular, it is worth looking at the actual journey from the property to the campus entrance rather than simply checking the distance on a map.

A home that looks slightly farther away can sometimes be much more convenient if it has a direct Metro connection.

Chaidari: Close to University With a Neighborhood Feel

Chaidari is another area that can make sense for UniWA students, particularly for those who want to stay in the western suburbs.

The area combines residential neighborhoods with shops, cafés and everyday services, making it suitable for students who want something more relaxed than living directly in the center of Athens.

The important thing is to look at the exact location of the room and how easily it connects to your campus.

You do not necessarily need to live in Aigaleo itself to have a convenient commute to the University of West Attica.

Peristeri: More Choices and Easy Access to the City

Peristeri is a larger and livelier area, with many options when it comes to apartments, rooms and shared accommodation.

For a student who wants to stay relatively close to university while also having plenty of cafés, restaurants, shops and places to go out, it can be an interesting alternative.

However, don’t look only at the monthly rent.

A room that costs €50 or €70 less per month but requires significantly more time and money for transportation may not actually be the cheaper option over the course of a full academic year.

Other Areas in Western Athens

Depending on the department and class schedule, students can also consider areas such as Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Aigaleo, Chaidari and parts of Piraeus.

The logic here is slightly different.

The farther you move from the university campus, the more important transportation becomes. A good connection to the Metro or a reliable bus route can make an area that initially seems far away quite practical.

For a student who travels to university four or five days a week, commuting is part of the real cost of housing.

What If You Prefer to Live Closer to Central Athens?

You don’t necessarily have to live in the western suburbs simply because you study at UniWA.

Areas such as Kolonos, Sepolia, Votanikos and Kerameikos, as well as other central neighborhoods, can also be considered, especially when the property is close to a Metro station or has a good public transport connection.

This option may suit a student who wants their social and student life to be closer to central Athens and doesn’t mind having a longer commute to university.

In other words, there isn’t one neighborhood that is right for everyone.

Flatsharing: An Option Worth Considering

For many students, the biggest challenge isn’t finding a neighborhood. It’s finding a home they can comfortably afford every month.

This is where flatsharing can make a significant difference.

Instead of renting a small studio alone, two or three students can share a larger apartment and split the rent, utilities and common household expenses.

For a University of West Attica student, this can mean being able to look for a better home in a well-connected area without having to cover the entire cost alone.

And flatsharing isn’t only a financial decision.

Who you live with, whether you have similar schedules and whether your everyday habits are compatible can make a huge difference to your experience at home.

Does the University Have Student Accommodation?

The University of West Attica provides student welfare services and accommodation opportunities for eligible students. However, the university does not operate its own independent student residence buildings in the same way as some other universities.

Accommodation opportunities may be available through collaborations and places in other student residences, subject to specific eligibility requirements and availability.

For students who do not secure a place, the private rental market and flatsharing therefore remain important options.

The university also provides student dining facilities, with free meals available to eligible students under the relevant conditions.

What Should You Look for Before Renting a Room?

Being “close to UniWA” isn’t enough.

Before renting a room, check how long it actually takes to reach your specific department. Look at whether the journey is convenient by Metro or bus, how many changes are required and what the trip looks like in the evening.

Then look at the total cost.

A €400 room with reasonable utility costs may be a better option than a €350 room that requires significantly more money and time for transportation.

And if you choose flatsharing, don’t only look at the apartment.

Look at the person you will be sharing it with.
