Where Do University of Athens Students Live? Best Areas

Where Do University of Athens Students Live?

If you’re starting your studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA / University of Athens), one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is where to live.

And there is an important detail: the University of Athens is not located in just one place. Its schools and departments are spread across different parts of Athens, so the best area for you will depend largely on where your department is located.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is one of the largest and oldest universities in Greece. It has 9 Schools and 42 undergraduate degree programs, with facilities located in different parts of Athens.

So, where do University of Athens students usually live?

📍 1. Zografou

Zografou is probably the most obvious choice for many University of Athens students.

The university’s main campus is located in the area, and several schools and departments are based there, including the School of Philosophy and many departments of the School of Sciences.

Why live in Zografou?

  • You’re close to the university campus
  • There are many student apartments and rooms
  • Strong student atmosphere
  • Plenty of cafés, restaurants and everyday shops
  • In many cases, you can walk to university

Best for: Students who want to be as close as possible to the main campus.

📍 2. Ilisia

Ilisia is located right next to the university campus and is another popular choice.

The area offers relatively easy access to Zografou while also putting you closer to central Athens.

It’s a good option if you want a combination of:

university + city centre + student life.

📍 3. Kaisariani

Kaisariani is another area worth considering if you’re studying at the University of Athens.

It’s close to the university campus and offers a number of housing options, making it an interesting alternative to Zografou.

The area also has convenient access to the university campus and its surroundings.

📍 4. Pangrati

If you want more nightlife and prefer to be closer to central Athens, Pangrati is one of the best options.

It’s not as close to the university campus as Zografou or Ilisia, but it offers:

  • Lots of shops
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • A lively social scene
  • Easy access to central Athens
  • Plenty of options for flatsharing

For students who want to combine university with life in central Athens, Pangrati can be a great choice.

📍 5. Goudi

If you’re studying Medicine, Nursing or another subject connected with the university’s medical facilities, Goudi can be a much more practical option.

The University of Athens Medical School is located on Mikras Asias Street in Goudi, within a large medical campus.

So, not every University of Athens student should focus exclusively on Zografou.

Your department should be your first consideration.

🏠 What if you don’t want to rent alone?

Flatsharing is one of the most practical solutions for students in Athens.

Instead of paying for an entire apartment yourself, you can rent a room and share:

  • Rent
  • Bills
  • Internet
  • Common expenses
  • Household costs

But the most important part is finding a roommate who fits your lifestyle.

A student who wakes up at 7 AM for classes may not be the perfect match for someone who comes home at 4 AM.

That’s why flatsharing isn’t only about price.

It’s about compatibility.

🎓 Another option: Student accommodation

The University of Athens also operates the Student Residence of the University of Athens (FEPA) at the university campus.

The residence provides 1,064 student places, including single and double rooms. Admission is based on specific social and financial criteria.

However, places are limited, so for many students, renting a room or sharing an apartment remains the most realistic option.

Which area is best for you?

Area Access to University Campus Student Life City Centre
Zografou ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
Ilisia ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kaisariani ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
Pangrati ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Goudi ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐

There isn’t one correct answer for everyone.

The best area is the one that works best for your department, budget and lifestyle.
