7 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Roommate

7 Questions to Ask Before Saying “Yes” to a Roommate

When you’re looking for a roommate, it’s easy to focus on the practical things: how much is the rent, where is the apartment, and when is the room available?

But the apartment can be perfect and the living situation… not so much.

Living with someone means sharing your everyday life, personal space, cleaning, expenses and habits. That’s why, before saying “yes”, it’s worth asking a few questions that can help you understand whether you are actually a good match.

1. What is your daily routine like?

Ask about the other person’s schedule.

Do they wake up early or sleep late? Do they work or study? Do they spend a lot of time at home or are they usually out?

You don’t need to have the same schedule. But if one person wants peace and quiet at 11 PM while the other comes home at 3 AM, there will probably be problems.

2. What does a “clean home” mean to you?

Cleaning is one of the most common causes of disagreements between roommates.

For one person, “clean” means washing the dishes immediately. For someone else, it might mean washing them the next day.

Ask clearly:

  • How often do you clean?
  • Who takes care of the common areas?
  • Should household chores be shared?
  • Would you be comfortable with a cleaning schedule?

Better to have an uncomfortable conversation now than an argument two months later.

3. How do you feel about guests and friends?

This is something people often forget about until it becomes a problem.

Some people like being able to have friends over whenever they want. Others prefer their home to be quieter and more private.

It’s also worth talking about partners and overnight guests.

“How often do you have people over?”

It’s a simple question that can tell you a lot.

4. How should expenses be shared?

Rent is only part of the cost.

There are also:

  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Internet
  • Building fees
  • Cleaning products
  • Shared household purchases

Agree from the beginning who pays for what and when.

You don’t need to keep track of every coffee or roll of kitchen paper, but the basic rules should be clear.

5. Do you smoke or have a pet?

These aren’t small details.

If you don’t smoke, it’s important to know whether your potential roommate smokes inside the home.

The same applies to pets, allergies or other habits that could affect your everyday life.

Don’t assume that something will change after you move in together.

6. What do you expect from your roommate?

This may be the most important question.

Ask:

“What do you think makes someone a good roommate?”

The answer can tell you much more than simply “I’m clean and quiet.”

Do they want a roommate who also becomes a friend? Or do they simply want someone who pays their share on time and respects their personal space?

There is no right answer.

There is only the answer that fits you.

7. What will we do if a problem comes up?

No roommate is perfect.

At some point, you may disagree about cleaning, expenses, music or guests.

What matters is how the other person handles disagreements.

Ask:

“If we have a problem with the way we’re living together, how would you like us to solve it?”

If you can have an open conversation before you even move in together, you’ve already taken an important step towards a better living experience.

The Perfect Home Doesn’t Guarantee a Perfect Living Situation

You might find an amazing apartment, in a great area, at a very good price.

But if you don’t get along with the person you’ll be living with, all of that can quickly become less important.

So before making a decision, don’t only ask:

📍 Where is the apartment?
💰 How much does it cost?

Also ask:

👤 Who will I be living with?
